Lord Janner child abuse trial was a decision for court, says former DPP

Lord Macdonald QC, the former director of public prosecutions, says a judge should have ruled on the prosecution so there was ‘no doubt’ over the decision


The decision as to whether Labour peer Lord Janner should have stood trial over allegations of child sex abuse should have been taken by a court rather than by prosecutors, a former director of public prosecutions (DPP) has said.


Lord Macdonald QC piled pressure on the current DPP, Alison Saunders, on Saturday by saying that if a judge had decided whether to continue with the prosecution, there would have been “no doubt” the allegations Janner had committed serious sexual offences had been properly handled.
